The Highly Sensitive Person Survival Guide:
and how most HSP's also have a creative mind
To have a creative mind means to have big passions- passions for life, passions for art, passions for relationships- but this also means the passions in general! The capacity for big feelings is something that Creative People and Highly Sensitive People share. Both HSPs and Creative People have gone through their lives struggling to feel "in control" of big feelings, being overwhelmed by big feelings, or getting stuck in situations or trapped in health systems that didn't understand their big feelings as is part of their identity. To have these strong emotions is part of who you are, and this is a strength and important aspect of your personality- you don't need to fight and struggle! In Creativity Counseling, you will discover the freedom and ease of understanding and living with your powerful emotions, as the all-important information sources they are in your life.
Taking a Logical Leap
Because powerful feelings are such a main feature of the Creative Personality, if you are a Highly Sensitive Person, I am taking the logical leap that you are also probably highly creative. While this may mean you have an inclination for the arts, it also means much more than that! If you are interested in finding out how creative you are, you can take the Creative Personality quiz here. Creative People have passions and energies that are big, and focused on authenticity, making meaning, and paving their own way in the world. They have personalities with features and needs that are specific and need to be understood and supported- and those are the fundamentals of my philosophy!
The Struggle is in Control
Most traditional mental health approaches do not serve Highly Sensitive People, because they teach you to control, suppress, tolerate or block your emotions. When you feel all of your emotions powerfully, by taking this approach you are inviting into your life a constant struggle. When you begin to work with the philosophy of healing in Creativity Counseling, you instead understand that as a Creative Person, it is part of who you are to feel deeply, and this feelings are an important part of your life experiences. When you start listening and stop resisting your experiences, you will begin to feel a release from your pain and suffering.
Big Feelings are not a Problem
One of the difficulties with the mental health system, is emotional experiences become labeled as problems and symptoms. This is especially marginalizing to HSP's whose life revolves around their emotional experience of the world. Your emotions are the way that your body is communicating experiences and information to your brain. As there is diversity in people, there is diversity in the intensity in emotions. It just so happens, that as the Creative Person has a natural need to make meaning of the world around them and live an authentic life, emotions are a natural and important part of that, and HSP's and Creative People are often the same people. Unfortunately, then, the mental health system can fail to meet the needs of both groups, because of their clinical structure. What a tragedy! Your feelings are not a problem- they are a gift!
With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility
As an HSP and Creative Person with powerful emotions, you have very strong forces at your disposal, and, like anything powerful, this can go well, or, not so well for you. When someone comes to me for counseling, it is usually because their powerful emotions have disserviced them in some way in their life. The work we will do together in Creativity Counseling, is understand where your strong feelings have caused you difficulties, and, how we can help channel them into directions that not only serve you, but ultimately launch you into the life of your dreams.
